In the late 60's it was MORE of a thing with silver US quarters and dimes. It was specifically illegal from 1967 to 1969, because silver in quarters and dimes (nickels were never silver) became profitable to melt. Also the Kennedy half-dollar, but that was less common. The silver coins were changed to nickel-clad copper after 1964.
