The closer range allows for more consistent accurate readouts by using the same scan as the mining laser. It's broken. I doubt they intended to remove radar signatures from ping scans. Mining is severely affected as you're unable to identify the type or quantity of deposit unless you're at it.

I found that with the new changes to scanning to identify rocks (and salvage) via RS signal, you can adjust your “ping” or scanning angle in scanning mode to achieve the same results as the pinging strategies used in mining during 3.17.X.
