Yes, it's slower, but the IQ according to many reviewers is comparable to the 17-55, and it's wider (yes, 1mm does make a difference) and longer, with VR.

I have had all three versions, Hated the first two, love the F4 version, very sharp already at F4, I cant tell the difference (sharpness wise) between the 24-70 and the 24-120 at F5.6 and on. Only weakness is vignetting and distortion at wide angles, Lens correction in CS5 takes care of that.The 300 f/4 PF is about as sharp as its predecessor, which is plenty sharp for most people. The 300 f/4 PF + TC-14e III also handily beats the 80-400 at the 400mm end. Even with a TC-17e II at 500mm, I still find the 300 f/4 PF sharp enough on my D810. Encouraging to hear.

Feb 12, 2018 · The 24-120 is weakest around 85-120mm, where I definitely need to stop down at least one stop. It's also less than perfect in the corners at 24mm. I tend to bring my 85/1.8 along for situations that need more wide open sharpness and better bokeh, and my 16-35 to cover the weakness at 24mm. Cheers.
