SP2022, conversion .40cal to 9mm. I am about to drop the hammer on a full size S&W M&P40 but I like the fact that the SP2022 is also capable of single action fire which initially put it at the top of my list. However, one very attractive feature of the M&P is it's ability to be switched between .40cal and 9mm (also .357 sig) very cheaply.

My guess is that Sig would have discontinued the model entirely had it not been for the French Government contract. There are rumors, that I have not verified with Sig factory that state the SP2022 was named such as it was a gun made in the year 2000 and slated to be part of the pistol lineup for 20 years, hence the service life ending in (SP)2022. The SP stands for SigPro. There are also rumors that the SP2022 were discontinued; that is not true.
SIG is only contractually obligated to keep manufacturing the SP2022 until next year. There aren’t yet any definitively announced plans in regards to what the company’s plans are for the pistol afterwards. Nonetheless, for now the SP2022 simply doesn’t deserve to be as overlooked as it is.

If you would be satisfied with a gun that is. pretty accurate and reliable, the SP2022 would be a great choice if the price is right. OTOH, consider that you can get a 'real' SIG "P" Gun (P220 / P226 / P229 / P228) used for $400-500. Necrophilia is a dying art.
