Jun 6, 2014 · In general Rad-Onc tends to be much better in lifestyle. this is highly decisive. Rad onc is somewhate more technical related, I think. You like call, rounding the wards, placing catheters and chemo -> heme/onc. You like controlled schedule in the clinic and radiotherapy -> rad/onc. Last edited: Jun 11, 2014.

Just an addition: the lifestyle is variable, but in general, the heme/onc lifestyle is much better than that of some of the other medical subspecialties such as cardiology, critical care or even gastroenterology.

You have to match into and complete residency in IM first and then apply for fellowship through another match process just the same as you would for residency. So it’s a 6 year path- 3 years IM and 3 years heme/onc. It has become very competitive due to the relatively good lifestyle. I am an IMG as well. Heme/Onc is a terrific field. We get to know the patients well, it is mentally stimulating, nothing is routine or monotonous. The cons are that it involves very serious illness. Many of us grow close to patients and it can take an emotional toll when patients die or become sick. Suppose that is most of medicine though. Vast majority of private practice is a combo of heme/onc and a single board limits you greatly for jobs. If you would like an academic career in heme only may be worth considering, if I recall these 2 year fellowships are at very research heavy places as well. I would consider rheumatology as well.
