A blown fuse could cause this problem. Most likely this is a faulty latch in the liftgate. Since the ajar light is on this tells me the latch is the problem. Once you have the gate open you can test for power when pressing the open button. If you have power and ground then this will verify that the latch is the problem.

Check fuse F65 in the passenger compartment under glove box. If that is ok you should see a small rectangular panel on the inside of the liftgate if you fold the back seats down.
