Having said that, as a specialist, you will earn specialist wages regardless of changes in chemo reimbursment. Before the recognized shortage, Hem/Onc specialists were making around 200. As for competitiveness, Hem/Onc is one of the less competitive subspecialties in medicine. Financially, heme onc probably makes 1.5-2x more than Hospitalist. Money is not too important to me and I feel like I would be very happy already with a $250k+ Hospitalist salary working half of the year. As a Hospitalist, I could always moonlight or take on side gigs such as SNF director to supplement income.Third Year of Fellowship Training.
