I've been going to the Outer Banks almost religiously since the spring of '84. The first 25 or so years were spent in hotels/motels, which seem to have become an endangered species over the last decade and a half. The last 5 years have involved rental cottages, which have been hit or miss.

My family's had a non-rental second house on Hatteras Island in Avon for over 40 years. I can assure you that the Outer Banks is a great place to have a vacation home but it's a challenging place to be responsible for a structure.
