How much power can a stock 1.8t engine handle? I looking to get my 1.8 jetta tuned im wondering how much power it can handle with stock internals? If your 1.8T is a '99 through '01 it is VW rated at 150hp. If it is a '02 through '04 & 1/2' it is rated at 180hp. This is VW rated hp not brake hp.You can get them handle power/torque levels above that but they are generally not reliable enough for everytday street use. At 700hp with street tires, you could probably put a stock 4L80E in there with a decent torque converter and a $90 Transgo kit and drive it on a daily basis with very good reliability at your proposed power levels.If it's in the 1" range, then that's the modern equivalent of a 28 spline axle. A 28 spline axle will handle up to 350 ft/lbs of torque at the flywheel - that's typical SBC Chevy, FWIW. I don't know about the torque though. Alot of guys are usin this trans in high hp LSx builds. It does cost a few bills to get it right, but so does a lot of things.

If you run 350 to 400 HP on a stop 10 bolt and it's for the street then your fine. Street tires, stock type stall, and street driving will be fine. It's the shock to the rear ends that hurt them.

But some were rated higher depending on it's application. 1989 was not a high horsepower maybe 230 or torque motor if I recall correctly.
