The one that's marked byf they called a mismatched gun because some of you, who if you watch my channels, the code for the Mauser factory was S/42 at first. K-dates, G-dates, 1936-7, all the way up to '39 they used S/42 and then they just used the code 42. 42 was the code for the Mauser factory. But in 1941 they changed the code to byf.
Looks like what you said a 1938 S/42 Luger. Finish looks original, these pistols were hot salt blued, no strawed small parts. I would take it apart to check the interior numbers including the grips which weren't always numbered but they do seem to go with the pistol condition wise. More detailed pictures would help but I think it's safe to say that your Luger is a post-WW1 rework converted to .30 caliber for export to America. The date that was on it has been scrubbed as many that were reworked were.

If they do, the gun has a value of around $1400. Next, we need to know the condition of the bore. If it is excellent, this would .bring the value up to about $1600. You have a magazine with a wood bottom, and if it has a number which matches the gun this will bring the value up to about $2100.

If the frame has a "P08" stamp just below the left toggle knob, if the date on the receiver is "41" or "42" and the maker's stamp on the middle toggle is "byf" I'd say the black plastic grip panels are correct.
