To deal with the non-lethal infections, use alcohol wipes, bottles of disinfectant, and sterilized bandages. If all else fails, find and take some antibiotics. This trait grants a chance for the player to have immunity against the zombie virus, making them immune to infections and able to survive bites from zombies without getting infected. However, immunity diminishes with each use of the trait.
So basically, don't get bitten or scratched is the only way to avoid getting infected. On default settings, a bite is guaranteed zombification and scratches and lacerations from zombies are 7%/25% respectively. Disinfecting or otherwise treating the wounds has no effect on catching the zombie virus.

A normal infected wound just reduces your healing factor. Even if you ignore it completely, it will eventually go away assuming you didn't also get the zombie infection. For the zombie infection, since bites are 100% infection rate, if you were bitten that is your only guaranteed indicator that you have the zombie infection.

To be clear, you can turn off 'zombie infection'. If you do not use clean bandages, and keep the bite clean, you might get a normal infection.
